Gehard Demetz

Hello All! This is some work by Gehard Demetz. He is an Italian sculptor who works mainly with wood and creates the most stunning images of these children. The unfinished quality to their clothing and softness of their hands and face I find to be particularly striking. While the allegoric value of certain iconography commands my attention as to the underlying message of the sculpture.

  1. The macro view; a highly sophisticated understanding of the body, its details and proportions is in stark contrast with the micro level with its crude construction of wooden blocks put together quite loosely. But then again, this loose construction appears quite controlled with open spaces evenly distributed when seen from a distance. An amazing combination that creates an eerie presence.
